I‘ve been playing ultimate for about 9 years, since I was a sophomore in High School. I started playing for the Cincinnati YCC team my junior year of HS, and captained both my YCC and HS teams my senior year. I attended Carleton College and played for 4 years, including my senior year where I was also a captain. I won a gold medal at the Under-24 World Championships in Perth, Australia in 2018, and won another gold medal in Heidelberg, Germany in 2019. I’ve been coaching with tourists over the past year and was an assistant Triangle YCC boys coach in the summer of 2019.

I am comfortable teaching just about any frisbee-related skill, but my personal expertise is in the following areas: throwing mechanics, pulling, defensive footwork, mental/emotional resilience.

Matt Gouchoe-Hanas

I started playing Ultimate in High School at Carolina Friends School (CFS). Since then I’ve been playing for UNC Darkside and Raleigh Ring of Fire. I’m in my 5th year playing for Darkside and my 3rd year as a captain. I’ve played 3 seasons for Ring of Fire, and was a captain this past season. I’ve also had the honor of playing for and winning gold with the USA U-24 Mixed National Team in 2018, and again in 2019 in Germany. I started coaching during my sophomore year of college. I coached Phillips MS for 1 year, and coached CFS MS for the 3 years since then. I’ve been an assistant coach for the CFS high school team for 4 years, and have also been an assistant coach for the Triangle’s U20 Boys YCC Team, TriForce, for 3 seasons.

I’m happy to work on throwing, defensive footwork, speed, and handler cutting.

Location: I’m based in Chapel Hill. It’s easiest for me to do things around UNC and Herndon is also an option.

Availability: Tuesday afternoon & evenings, Friday afternoons, Saturday and Sunday mornings

I am currently a player for UNC Darkside in my fifth year on the team, in addition to playing competitively I also coached for the YCC program the past two years. I was an assistant coach two years ago for NC Hammer the U-17 Boys A team, though I did not travel with the team to YCCs. Last summer I was an assistant coach for Lucky PuNC’s the U-17 Boys B team. I won a gold medal with the Under-24 US team at the World Championships in Germany in the summer of 2019.

I am willing to teach anything, I think that my four and a half years with Darkside has taught me enough about the game to provide help to most youth players. However, my strengths as a player and the aspects of the game I think I would be best at teaching are person defensive principles (both downfield and handler), pulling, and offensive downfield cutting.

I grew up in Asheville NC, where youth/high school ultimate has not yet taken off. I played casual pickup occasionally in high school but didn’t learn how intense and fun frisbee could be until I joined UNC Pleiades my first year in college at UNC-Chapel Hill. Within the first month I was hooked: throwing almost every day, spending time outside of practice with my teammates, and watching as much frisbee as I could. Our team failed to earn a bid to nationals that season, finishing second in the region but missing a chance to play on the big stage.

The summer after my first year in college I was a practice player for Raleigh Phoenix, and a rostered player on Rogue (a developmental team that no longer exists.) Since then I’ve grown into the role of either initiating or continuation cutter, usually on offense. I have continued that role over the summer playing for Raleigh Phoenix as a rostered player since 2016. Over my 3.5 year ultimate career, I have played on a French team (while studying abroad in Grenoble) and a Colombian team (while enrolled in language school over the summer). I have attended college nationals twice (tied for 13th in 2017, tied for 5th in 2018) and club nationals once (14th place.)

I’ve coached the CFS high school women’s team for two seasons, and the CFS middle school mixed team for one season. I’ve been involved in many GUM and LTC clinics through triangle ultimate over the past few years, and will be coaching the YCC U17 Kitty Hawks this summer.

Looking forward: I’m currently in my fourth year with UNC Pleiades with a #2 national ranking halfway through the spring season. I’ll be playing my 5th year at UNC while enrolled in Medical School next year. I’m rostered for the Raleigh Radiance 2019 season, and am playing for Phoenix. I won a gold medal with the USA U24 mixed national team in Germany in July 2019.

I’m happy to teach: Cutting principals, throwing: basics, break throws, defensive footwork, film work: frisbee terminology, zone breakdown
